Learning Every Day
The television burbles quietly to itself,
some true life murder mystery, safe for me to ignore.
The television is always safe for me to ignore.
I have taken the boys cell phone, and have told him it’s usage depends on his behaviour.
It is not the answer he is looking for and has asked why I am holding it hostage.
It’s a balancing act to be a parent, friendly but not too friendly.
Familiar yet slightly removed, so I can present myself as an authority.
When I came to you the boys were young, and we had a romantic whirlwind, instant family.
Together we were tackling the world, and now that we and they are older,
Our world has become so much smaller, sometimes our world is just the quiet talks we have.
Together alone strategics how are we going to respond as parents.
Just like the kids, we are learning every day.
